The Participation of the GRATA Law Firm's Representative in London in the presentation of the British-Kazakh Society

 

In December 2003 our Representative in London, Mr. R. Gaissin, has been honored to participate in a presentation before senior Kazakh judges in London.

The recently formed British-Kazakh Society was launched on Thursday 11th December at a Reception at St. James’ Palace in London, hosted by HRH the Duke of York, Joint Honorary Patron of the Society. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, Mr. Kairat Mami, attended the Reception as the Representative of the President of Kazakhstan, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, Joint Honorary Patron. HE the Ambassador of Kazakhstan in London was also present as was a wide cross-section of the diplomatic corps, UK business, the English judiciary and others.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Justice, accompanied by HE the Ambassador and by Mr. Justice Jakishev visited the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators CIArb) which Honorary President, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie QC (formerly Lord Advocate of Scotland and a Minister in the UK government) is also Co-Chairman of the Society. The meeting opened with a presentation by Mr. Hew R. Dundas entitled «International Arbitration and the Courts: Some Current Issues»; Mr. Dundas had been invited to give this presentation to the Chief Justice in his dual capacity as an Arbitrator of the International Arbitration Court of Kazakhstan and as a Chartered Arbitrator of the CIArb; the presentation surveyed Court decisions from 15 countries affecting International Arbitration and concluded with some respectful suggestions as to how the Kazakh judiciary might approach arbitration cases.

The presentation was given in English and Russian with bilingual slides and a 1,500 word supporting paper in both English and Russian. All translation work was done by members of Grata Law Firm and their excellent contribution was expressly referred to in Lord Fraser's summing-up of the meeting.

In the future, the GRATA Law Firm's Representative office in London is to take active part in such events stipulating further development of the judiciary system of Kazakhstan and the interchange between the lawyers of our countries.
