AmCham Legal and Compliance Working Group hosted its regular meeting on November 1, 2017.
The Chairman of the Working Group opened the meeting with a brief presentation on the International Bar Association (IBA) which was established in 1947 as the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies.
Guest speakers of the meeting were Mr. Barrington Parker, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge, and Mr. J. Paul Oetken, New York District Judge on Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Oetken made a brief overview of the US judicial system and shared his professional experience in terms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Mr. Oetken specified the potential advantages of the ADR concept as a whole which include saving money, confidentiality, flexibility, quickness. Importantly, he stressed upon that the US Chamber of Commerce back in the United States is a major supporter and advocate of the ADR development.
Mr. Parker continued with the introduction of the very essence of the ADR.
Further, the participants of the meeting had a chance to ask their questions related to the topic discussed, in particular, regarding the potential of the ADR introduction in Azerbaijan. The end of the meeting was dedicated to the current discussions on depriving non-advocates of the right to represent clients in courts as well as the current issues facing the legal profession globally.
