Experience
Shaimerden Chikanayev is a Partner and the Head of Finance and Securities
Department at GRATA Law Firm.
Shaimerden joined GRATA in September 2009. Previously, he worked for one year
as a Lawyer in an international law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf in Almaty, two
years as a Lawyer at the Legal Department of the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development in London, and three years as a Lawyer, then as
a Senior Lawyer at GRATA’s Astana office.
Shaimerden specialises in financial law and securities, bankruptcy and
restructuring, as well as Mergers and Acquisitions.
Shaimerden advised on the following
deals:
- acted as a Kazakh Lawyer for CNPC on its $3.3
billion acquisition of a 50 percent interest (together with KazMunayGas)
of MangystanMunayGas, a leading independent Kazakh oil producer and
refiner;
- advised foreign creditors on BTA Bank and
Alliance Bank restructuring and general insolvency proceedings in
Kazakhstan;
- acted as a Kazakh Lawyer for JSC National Company
KazMunayGas (KMG) and its Dutch finance subsidiary, KazMunaiGaz Finance
Sub B.V., in connection with an update of their Global Medium Term Note
Programme which concerned an increase in size of the Programme to $5
billion and issuance of $1.25 billion 11.75% notes by 2015, guaranteed by
JSC National Company KazMunayGas;
- advised an international bank on $ 90 million
secured loan to a Kazakh bank;
- advised an international bank on $ 135 million
syndicated loan to a Kazakh company to extend construction of a fibre
optic communications network along the railway tracks of Kazakhstan Temir
Zholy – Kazakhstan’s National Railways Company.
