Bolat Miyatov is a partner, head of the firm’s corporate and M&A practice. Bolat gained extensive experience as a transactional lawyer during his work both at major Kazakh commercial bank and GRATA. He is regularly involved in advising on the local Kazakh legal aspects of the numerous high-profile transactions in various industries, including the local oil & gas sector.

Bolat joined the GRATA’s team in 2009 and re-joined the firm in August 2017 after completion of the one-year LL.M (Master of Laws) program at Harvard Law School, one of the most preeminent and prestigious law schools in the world ranking among the top universities. He currently awaits the admission to the New York State Bar to become a dual-qualified lawyer.

He is a regular contributor to the World Bank Doing Business Survey and an author of numerous articles on corporate issues of Kazakh law, including director’s and officer’s liability. During his work at GRATA, Bolat’s team turned into the one of the most prominent M&A and corporate legal practices in Kazakhstan.

Bolat seamlessly combines his vast experience in the corporate field with in-depth knowledge of Kazakh competition law what enables the clients to get comprehensive advice on all legal implications and ensure the successful outcome of transactions. He handled numerous merger filings for cross-border takeovers and counselled on potential or ongoing anti-trust, anti-subsidy and anti-dumping investigation against local entities.

  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Polyus Gold International in the sale of $375 million of shares (including debt assignment) in Kazakhaltyn and Norox Mining (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan);

  • Advising (as Kazakh local counsel) Nord Gold, an international low-cost gold producer, a unit of Russian steelmaker Severstal, on the $1 billion IPO on the London Stock Exchange;

  • Acting for a Chinese investor in connection with the proposed acquisition of ShalkiyaZinc, a Kazakh leading zinc and mercury mining company;

  • Advising CGN Mining Company Limited, the largest Chinese uranium mining company, in connection with creating a joint venture with Kazatomprom JSC, a state-owned uranium enterprise;

  • Advising Polymetal, a major Russian gold and silver producer, on its $600 million acquisition of Bakyrchik Mining Venture;

  • Advising Kazatomprom on its acquisition 25%+1 share in Ural Electrochemical Integrated Plant, the largest uranium enrichment plant in the world;

  • Advising the shareholders of Cammex (Kazakh large gold producer) on its $200 million sale to Verniy Capital and Kazzinc;
